Premier League Club Take ‘First Choice’ Target From Leicester City After ‘Deal Looked Dead’

Following a clean sheet this past weekend versus Fiorentina, Mads Hermansen’s exit from Leicester City looks imminent. The Dane arrived in the East Midlands two seasons ago and helped City win promotion back to the Premier League. Standout performances early on in the club’s return highlighted the goalkeeper’s quality, especially as he made 13 saves at the Emirates. With this ability, it comes as no surprise that the 25-year-old looks set to depart.

Mads Hermansen: West Ham Advance

As reported by Rob Dorsett, West Ham have advanced in their pursuit of the goalkeeper, with a £18 million fee agreed upon. Graham Potter’s side also displayed interest in Botafogo’s John Victor, but a late U-turn after the “deal looked dead” sees Hermansen set to become the club’s new number one.

Dorsett also adds that the Leicester star has always been Potter’s “first choice”, as opposed to Victor, which could be a reason for the change. The player now travels to London to discuss personal terms and complete a medical.

Despite the Championship season starting in a few days, the exit would become just the second of the summer. Conor Coady’s £2m swap for Wrexham kicked off the departures, whilst Wilfred Ndidi looks set to follow suit.

How Does This Affect Leicester City

Over the last two seasons, the importance of Hermansen has been evident. Under Enzo Maresca, he tallied 13 clean sheets and transformed the style of play through his ball-playing abilities. An average of 51.39 touches per 90 emphasises this quality, as he often provided a numerical advantage during build-up. Although this wasn’t necessarily shown during his time in the Premier League, his shot-stopping still took centre stage.

As for the Foxes, an important player departs for a fee that could have been higher. Despite signing him for around £5 million, the keeper has proved to be a revelation and someone who has the potential to feature for top sides across Europe.

Due to the move, academy graduate Jakub Stolarczyk now becomes City’s number one, having been the Dane’s understudy for the last two seasons. Although the Polish international was second-choice, he still kept more clean sheets last season, which was a result of Hermansen’s injury woes.
