The recent news concerning Inigo Martinez has been a dagger for FC Barcelona. While it is true that the club will save a lot in terms of his salary thanks to his departure, there is undeniably a sporting disadvantage to the club. Moreover, there is no transfer fee involved as well.
However, a recent update from 3Cat reveals that Inigo Martinez has his own reasons for leaving the club this summer, despite a great showing last season both individually and collectively. As per the report, he believes he is not at the right physical level anymore.
Barcelona defender doubts his physicality capabilities

To be precise, he reportedly believes that he is no longer capable of playing fifty high-level games per season. This limitation could have negatively affected Barça’s overall performance, and that is something the player wanted to avoid.
From a sporting perspective, it is a respectable decision. After all, at 34 years old, Martinez is gradually approaching retirement and is no longer in his prime. However, there is no denying his quality as a player.
Reportedly, however, this potential move has only been possible due to the existence of a pre-existing gentleman’s agreement between Barça and Martinez.
Yet, if he does end up leaving, the club already has enough quality defensive options for Hansi Flick to utilise and come up with an alternative plan for next season.
