Jalen Brunson of the New York Knicks falls short of only two other guards in the NBA following a new ranking.
A lot of attention on the New York Knicks has been on their new deal with Mikal Bridges, who now has a major contract extension with the team, which is a four-year, $150 million deal. But, the kingpin of the Knicks is still the great Jalen Brunson.
It’s suffice to say that Brunson is the face of this franchise. He’s the heart and soul of the Knicks, and he’s one of the key leaders on the team. Now, the New York Knicks are gearing up for their 2025-26 season, and Brunson and new coach Mike Brown are hoping that this is the year they can get all the way to the championship. It would be pretty sweet if they were to win it, too.
Now, Brunson has been ranked on a new tally of the best guards in the NBA, and he only falls behind two others guards in the association. Maybe he can surpass them at some point, too.
New York Knicks’ Jalen Brunson is No. 3
Ranking NBA guards is no easy task, but Frank Urbina has done it. In a feature published on Monday, Aug. 4, for Hoops Hype, Urbina ranks all of the guards in the NBA and names the best. “The point guard position is one of the most loaded in the NBA today, featuring various MVP vote-getters, as well as the outright MVP winner for 2024-25, who fared quite well in this exercise,” he notes in the feature.

He has Brunson at No. 3, only behind Luka Doncic of the Lakers and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of Oklahoma City. This reporter would make the case that Brunson should be ahead of Doncic, but to each their own.
Brunson’s salary for the 2025-26 season is $34,944,001, making him 46th overall, and it’s really a steal for the Knicks. In the feature, Urbina calls him the “most important New York Knicks player in a decade” and says that Brunson continues “to play at an elite level last season, winning Clutch Player of the Year, finishing Top 10 in the MVP vote and earning 2nd Team All-NBA honors for the second year in a row.”
Jalen Brunson is ‘Answering Question’ About His Abilities
“Brunson was also able to lead New York to the Conference Finals for the first time since the year 2000 last season, as the Knicks came within two games of reaching the NBA Finals outright,” he adds. “So although there were questions on whether Brunson can be the best player on a true championship contender, it seems the former Villanova standout is slowly starting to answer those questions.”
The Knicks have come to rely heavily on Brunson, and that will likely continue during the 2025-26 season. It better continue, because he’s one of the main pieces of the puzzle of getting the Knicks to a championship. Brunson’s delivery on the court may vary a little bit from the past, with a new head coach in Brown at the top, but it will pretty much be the same player the Knicks have come to know and love. He’ll be an A-list NBA point guard for years to come.
