Villa tipped to open new contract talks with another pivotal figure for Emery

Aston Villa are reportedly planning to open talks with captain John McGinn over a possible new contract to extend his stay with us.

The 30-year-old has firmly established himself as a fundamental figure for the club since he arrived from Hibernian in 2018, and having amassed 285 appearances in that time, he remains a pillar of Unai Emery’s team.

With another big season ahead for Villa as we continue to compete on multiple fronts in our bid to qualify for the Champions League and win silverware, McGinn will play a pivotal role in that process, and amid reported interest in signing him from Everton and Newcastle United, it’s now reported that Villa could offer our skipper a new contract.

According to The Athletic, Villa are planning to open talks over a new deal with the Scottish international, as it’s explicitly noted that we want to keep him at the club to continue to be a key presence for Emery.

McGinn’s current deal runs until June 2027, and so although there isn’t necessarily a real rush to agree on new terms, securing our captain’s long-term future would undoubtedly be a major boost to continue to build on the likes of Boubacar Kamara and Lucas Digne putting pen to paper on new contracts over the past month.

Meanwhile, it comes at a time when Everton are said to have had an £18m bid rejected for the Villa midfielder, as per the report above, while Newcastle are said to be interested in him too.

Signing a new deal would put an end to that exit speculation, and would instead lock in another critical player for the foreseeable future as we look to continue to make progress under Emery and become increasingly competitive.

Time will tell if an announcement will be forthcoming before the season starts, but with Villa seemingly making it a priority to secure new deals for key individuals so as to keep the core of this squad together this summer, it’s hoped that there will be more positive news to follow soon with McGinn remaining a big influence in this side with his tenacity, energy, quality and ability to set the tone and tempo on and off the pitch with his professionalism and leadership.
