San Antonio Spurs

When the San Antonio Spurs committed $229 million over four seasons–the maximum possible–to keep De’Aaron Fox in town, some fans were riled up.
After all, with all that money tied up in Fox and Victor Wembanyama all but a lock to sign a max deal of his own, how will the Spurs afford Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle down the line?
As we previously covered, there is no guarantee that either Harper or Castle will ever be better than Fox is now. Granted, both have sky-high potential, but the reality is some players never get to that level.
With role-players like Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, and Julian Champagnie all on team-friendly contracts, the Spurs are expected to sign another critical, yet overlooked, player to a deal that should appease fans.
Jeremy Sochan can extend his rookie contract this summer, or he could pass up an offer and enter unrestricted free agency next year. With Jonathan Kuminga, Josh Giddey, and Cam Thomas all falling short of their requests, taking the money might be the smart thing.
“With Sochan entering the final year of his contract, the Spurs may consider offering him an extension,” explained Fadeaway World’s Siddhant Gupta. “Reports suggest he could earn a 3-to-4-year deal worth $60–80 million in total, putting him in a strong position. San Antonio could opt to extend him now or risk restricted free agency next season.”
If Sochan signs a contract worth $20 million per season, he will eat roughly 13 percent of the cap every year. For a secondary facilitator and excellent defender, even with his shortcomings on offense, it’s hard not to justify that deal.
