Villa defeated the Serie A giants 4-0 in Walsall on Wednesday night as our preparations for the new Premier League campaign continue, and Unai Emery will be hoping that his squad can come through this final stretch unscathed.

Unfortunately, there was a blow in midweek as Rogers was replaced just minutes after coming on at half-time, and so there was concern that he might have sustained an injury that could disrupt his start to the season albeit with the hope that the decision was ultimately a precautionary one to avoid aggravating the problem further.
According to [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6539834/2025/08/07/morgan-rogers-injury-update-aston-villa/), the 23-year-old didn’t suffer any serious issue with his ankle, and the hope is said to be that he’ll be available for selection against Newcastle United in our league opener on August 16.
That said, it’s added that further tests are expected to be carried out after the initial assessment didn’t reveal anything too concerning, and so it’s hoped that the additional results prove to be reassuring and confirm that he won’t miss the start of the season.
Ideally, Rogers will be available to play in one of our final pre-season friendlies against Marseille and Villarreal this weekend, as he’ll be eager to continue to get minutes, build his match fitness and work on his sharpness to ensure that he’s in peak condition for the first game of the campaign.
If that’s not possible, then resting and recovering to ensure he can face Newcastle will be the priority, and he’ll be desperate for more positive news in the coming week to confirm that he won’t have to sit out and risk disrupting the early part of his season.
Villa do have alternative options in that department to cover for Rogers if he is absent in just over a week’s time, but having impressed and been such a key figure for us last season with 14 goals and 16 assists in 54 appearances across all competitions, it’s hoped that his resilience and durability will shine through again this year.
