Liverpool are monitoring all possible alternatives for the centre-back role as their primary target, Marc Guehi, might be too expensive.
Depending on the whole season, with just two proper centre-backs might not be a good decision for the Reds. Virgil van Dijk is already 34, and Ibrahima Konate’s contract extension hasn’t been done yet. However, the club are reportedly confident about extending the French centre-back’s deal.
On the other hand, Joe Gomez’s past injury record isn’t a green light for the Merseysiders to see him as a reliable backup option. After selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen this summer, Marc Guehi became the top choice to replace him.
Earlier reports suggest that the Reds have placed two bids for Guehi, but Crystal Palace rejected both. The London club have set a price tag of €55m and aren’t showing any signs of lowering it.

Liverpool might have a new name on their list
As per Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg, the Merseyside club are closely monitoring Giovanni Leoni. The talented 18-year-old centre-back from Parma is already on their radar for this summer, although nothing is advanced at this stage. However, Liverpool’s main focus currently remains on Marc Guehi.

The Italian defender showed great consistency last season for the Serie A side. He appeared in 17 league matches for Parma and also scored 1 goal.
Reports suggest the Reds might wait until late in the transfer window to fill the centre-back position, as the club are now also closely monitoring Alexander Isak’s situation.
