One of the more intriguing stories for the Pittsburgh Steelers is when Aaron Rodgers will see his first real snaps with the team in game action. There was some discussion regarding him suiting up and playing on Saturday in the opening game of the preseason.
However, we have now received confirmation of the future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback’s status heading into his first preseason game as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Let’s take a closer look at what Mike Tomlin said to reporters.

While talking to reporters on Thursday, coach Mike Tomlin revealed that some key players are going to be skipping the first preseason game on Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“I’ve identified some guys that won’t be playing in this game this week. It has nothing to do with injury. They need less runway to take off, to be quite honest with you, because of their experience and where they are in their careers. Oftentimes, I preserve them through this process while providing more opportunity for those that need more preparation, or more opportunity to display their talents and so forth.”
Tomlin would then list names of players who would not be playing, which included quarterback Aaron Rodgers. This comes after Rodgers said he would be “fully on board” to play in this game if that was what coach Tomlin decided. Rodgers has not played in the preseason since 2023 with the Jets and before that was in 2018 as a member of the Packers.
It will be interesting to see if we see Aaron Rodgers in a preseason game at any point or if we need to wait until Week 1 against the New York Jets.
