Kristjaan Speakman insisted that convincing a player to come to Sunderland on loan as well as assuring the parent club it’s a good thing is never easy.
And he revealed the Black Cats had to fight of fierce rivalry from other interested parties to ensure the signature dynamic young Spanish forward Marc Guiu.
Sunderland’ director of football is delighted it worked in the case of Guiu after he joined from Chelsea on a season-long deal.
Regis Le Bris’ side struggled for goals last season in the Championship and ended the regular season scoring just four in their final 10 league matches – and just one in the final five.
In that respect they needed additional firepower and it is hoped Guiu will provide that in the toughest of environments.
At 19, he has taken on a lot of responsibility.
Speakman told the club: “In a loan acquisition, we not only have to convince the player but also the parent club, and we thank Chelsea for placing their trust in us.
"Most importantly, Marc wanted to come to Sunderland and be a part of our club.
“The competition for his signature was significant, and he had many high-quality options this summer, so we are delighted he’s joined Sunderland.
"Marc’s a progressive striker who has key attributes that align with the role in our team.
“In addition to providing a threat in the final third, we believe there are many other ways he can impact games, and we look forward to helping him do that throughout the 2025/26 season.”
Guiu becomes the ninth new signing at the club.
