Newcastle United are unable to sell the goalkeeper due to the impact it would have on PSR.
The Greece international joined the Magpies from Nottingham Forest last summer for a reported £20million with Elliot Anderson heading the opposite direction for £35m in an agreement that saw both clubs comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
But for Vlachodimos, the switch to Tyneside has been a difficult one. The 31-year-old’s substitute appearances in the 1-0 Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon last October is his only competitive appearance, while he was named in the matchday squad on just 14 occasions last season.
Why Newcastle United are loaning - not selling Odysseas Vlachodimos
NewcastleWorld learned last month that Newcastle were actively trying to arrange a loan move for Vlachodimos, having put feelers out to intermediaries. In an ideal world, the Magpies would prefer the player to leave on a permanent deal, but that is widely accepted to be near impossible for at least the next few windows.
Newcastle are being forced to loan out Vlachodimos opposed to selling him due to the huge transfer fee they paid for him last summer. Unless they are able to recoup a significant fee for Vlachodimos, any sale would go down as a significant PSR loss on the books.
For example, having paid around £20m for the player and put him on what is believed to be a five-year deal, this summer the Greek will be worth around £16m on the books. In a PSR world, it would mean Newcastle would have to sell him for that figure, in order not to incur a loss on their calculations.
Odysseas Vlachodimos set to join La Liga side
After rejecting a move to Mexican side Pumas FC last month, the Greek goalkeeper is set to join La Liga side Sevilla for the 2025-26 season. As per Sky Sports News, Vlachodimos will undergo a medical today after flying to Spain on Wednesday night.
With Dubravka gone and Vlachodimos on the verge of leaving, Newcastle have trimmed their senior goalkeeping department to four, with Aaron Ramsdale, who joined on loan from Southampton last week, set to rival Nick Pope for the number one jersey. John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie are third and fourth choice.
Martin Dubravka leaves Newcastle United
Dubravja joined the Magpies in January 2018 from Sparta Prague, initially on loan, before completing a permanent move in the following summer after helping Rafa Benitez’s side retain their Premier League status.

The 36-year-old spent four full seasons at the Magpies’ number one. Nick Pope’s arrival in the summer of 2022 prompted Dubravka to join Manchester United on loan but after making just two appearances return to Tyneside in the January.
Since then, Dubravka has played back up to Pope but injuries to the England international have seen deputise more than expected. The 36-year-old was set to join Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab in January but was instead rewarded with a new contract after the Magpies climb the Premier League table and reach the Carabao Cup final.
