Chelsea have been dealt the major blow of losing key central defender Levi Colwill to a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The England international is now likely facing several months out of action, so probably won’t expect to feature that much for Chelsea in the upcoming 2025/25 campaign.
Colwill has been a key player for the Blues, so will undoubtedly be missed, but it seems there are not currently any plans to take to the market to replace him.
That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who has posted on X about Chelsea being happy with their current defensive options, including new signing Jorrel Hato, who can fill in at both left-back and centre-back…

“Chelsea have not activated any immediate ‘emergency plan’ to sign new centre back after Levi Colwill injury,” Romano said.

Chelsea have a lot of depth in their squad, but they could arguably do well to consider moving for another defender as Colwill was arguably their best centre-back.
Wesley Fofana can also be really good on his day, but has a poor injury record himself, while doubts remain over the likes of Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Benoit Badiashile.
Hato has played well in central defence before, but was signed primarily as a new left-back, according to a previous report by Ben Jacobs…

It will be interesting to see how Chelsea end up approaching this, but it seems there aren’t any imminent plans to make another signing at the back.
Are Chelsea over-spending in attack and neglecting their defence?
Chelsea seem to be focusing on their attack again this summer, having already brought in Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, Estevao Willian, and Liam Delap.
They might not even stop there, with CFC also pursuing Xavi Simons and Alejandro Garnacho as further attacking midfield additions.
This follows on from bringing in Pedro Neto, Joao Felix and Jadon Sancho last summer, even if those latter two have now left.
