Newcastle United are interested in Aston Villa captain John McGinn.
Howe said at the weekend: “We had six and we want six,’ Howe told Mail Sport. ‘Now we’re down to four, so that’s an issue for us. That is a position that we are looking in.
“We don’t think Joe Willock’s injury is serious. I gave a prognosis of four to six weeks, but that could be less. But I think it is an area that is a bit of a concern.”
Newcastle United show interest in Aston Villa captain John McGinn
As per Mail Sport, United are considering a move for Villa captain McGinn, but hopes of signing the midfielder could be short-lived.
The Athletic claims Villa are planning to hold talks over extending the Scotland international’s contract, which currently has two years left to run. Unai Emery has informed the club he does not want to lose McGinn.
Emery’s side have already rejected a £18million bid from Everton and said he is not for sale.
Newcastle United still active in the summer transfer window
Newcastle travel to Villa Park on the opening day of the campaign in just over a week’s time but have signed just one outfield player in Anthony Elanga. United then play Liverpool and Leeds United before the summer transfer window shuts on September 1.
As well as a midfielder, Howe wants to recruit at least one striker, which will become two if Alexander Isak joins Liverpool, and a centre-back.
Speaking recently about transfers, Howe said: “We're not deluded. We know we need to bring players in. We've known that for a long time. We did a lot of work (at the end of last season), we knew what we wanted. But it's been a challenging transfer window. Let's see what we can do.”

“The window is challenging for us,” Howe added. “We have multiple players that we are looking at across multiple positions.
"Other clubs will say the same. It is a challenging window as prices are going up and the pool of players we have to pick from is small. We are actively in the market, we are looking. I feel we need to do business, need to bring players in.
"With the challenge of the football calendar this season with all the games we are going to have, we need the options and depth. As we found out two years ago, it's a totally different campaign with Champions League football.
“I hope we can bring players in and not just players but ones that can make a difference. We won't stop until the window shuts."
