Everton are in talks to sign Manchester City and England midfielder Jack Grealish on loan.

The 29-year-old is eager to leave The Etihad this summer, after spending much of last season out of the team.

Head coach Pep Guardiola has indicated that Grealish is no longer part of his plans, with Manchester City now ready to facilitate a loan move away.

Everton confirmed that their fifth signing of the summer had joined the club on Wednesday (6 August), with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall arriving from Chelsea in a deal worth around £25million.

Grealish wages to provide stumbling block

In the years following his £100m move, Grealish has struggled to recapture the form that placed him among the Premier League’s most exciting players.

The midfielder had enjoyed two superb seasons for Aston Villa, earning himself a reputation for his creative and unpredictable style on the ball.

Six goals and 12 assists in the 2020/21 Premier League placed him firmly in the interest of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, with Manchester City eventually agreeing to meet Villa’s price tag.

But Grealish quickly discovered that Guardiola’s system would not provide the same freedom, and his form suffered for it.

The England international’s best campaign in sky blue came in the 2022/23 season, when he provided 16 direct goal contributions as City won the treble.

Now, the midfielder is looking for a new environment in a bid to recapture his former form ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Everton and West Ham are interested in Grealish, but it is the Toffees who have entered negotiations with Manchester City.

An issue, however, will be Grealish’s wages, which reportedly amount to £300,000 per week.

Speaking on TalkSPORT (7 August), Scott Minto said the 29-year-old may have to reduce his wages to make the move happen.

“Unless he was in that treble-winning form then Pep wouldn’t want him to go, Everton are not going to pay £300,000 per week,” Minto said.

He continued: “I’m pretty sure, I can’t speak on behalf of him (Moyes) but £300,000 per week to play for Everton, that’s a lot of money. So I’d be very surprised.

“Whether Jack will actually say ‘do you know what? I’ll drop some wages because I want to play.'”

Fresh start could prove crucial for Grealish

Grealish’s priorities will prove key in any potential move the midfielder makes this summer.

If the 29-year-old hopes to make Thomas Tuchel’s England squad next summer, taking a wage cut should not be a problem.

Everton could provide exactly the fresh start that Grealish is looking for, with Moyes likely willing to afford the midfielder the same freedom he enjoyed at Villa.
