Liverpool do not need Alexander Isak to win the Premier League next season - and the Anfield side have been warned of the perils of having 'too many riches' in their squad.

The Newcastle United striker is currently training on his own after indicating that he wants to leave Tyneside this summer, with Liverpool seeing an initial bid worth more than £110m turned down.

The Swede will not be involved in United's final two pre-season friendlies this weekend, with games against Espnayol tonight and Atletico Madrid on Saturday at St James' Park.

Newcastle are unwilling to allow Isak to leave before they have secured a replacement, but saw a No 1 target Benjamin Sesko decide to move to Manchester United this week.

They remain in the market for a striker, with Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson, Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins and Yoane Wissa of Brentford all linked with a move to the North East.

However, former Liverpool and England goalkeeper David James has warned the Reds that a record transfer bid for Isak may disrupt their squad - and that they don't need him to retain their Premier League crown in the coming season.

Speaking at the launch of Final One Standing by William Hill, James said:“Liverpool don’t need Alexander Isak to win the Premier League. It’s possible for a team to be blessed with too many riches – and it can end with disappointing results.

“I know it’s important not to attach too much importance to pre-season fixtures, but Liverpool look like a well-balanced side full of confident players.

"If they were to sign Isak, one immediate benefit would be that it would significantly weaken Newcastle.

"But that’s not the difference between winning the Premier League or not – it wouldn’t make them any stronger favourites than they already are.”
