Manchester United have reached a clever agreement with RB Leipzig as part of their discussions to sign Benjamin Sesko

Manchester United have won the race to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko with confirmation of a deal expected before the end of the week.

The Red Devils have agreed a £74m deal with the Bundesliga outfit with the Slovenian international set to undergo a medical at Old Trafford on Friday. Newcastle United had bid a club record £78.5m for Sesko but the striker made it clear he wanted to move to Manchester, with the Magpies facing another tough rejection this transfer window.

It is a major win for the Old Trafford outfit, who have been crying out for a new striker. Despite having no European football on offer, United have managed to usurp Newcastle with a lower offer - helped of course by Sesko’s desire to play for the Red Devils.

Manchester United agree friendly with RB Leipzig to generate millions in extra revenue for German club

He reported: “Leipzig and Man United have also agreed on a joint friendly in Leipzig, which will generate around €1.5–2 million for RB. The Benjamin Sesko deal also includes a sell-on clause for Leipzig. The agreed €85 million including bonuses are easily achievable.”

The estimate of added revenue in pounds is between £1.3m and £1.73m. Despite not having European football on offer, United have kept their transfer pull intact this summer but they need to start selling players soon to balance the books as their revenue has still taken a hit.

Money-spinning friendly is not something Newcastle United could have pulled off

United, despite their struggles on the pitch last season, remain one of the world’s biggest football clubs. They are easily among the top five football clubs on the planet, with an argument they are only behind Real Madrid in the global pecking order. Although Barcelona and Liverpool fans may have something to say about that.

Regardless, United’s size and popularity means a friendly game against Leipzig will be a money-spinning one for the German club. For Newcastle, the same pull does just not exist and it was likely never part of the equation for the Magpies in their talks with Leipzig.

It may go some way to explain why the north east club have had such a tough time recruiting players this window, with several of their targets heading for other Premier League clubs.
