Farke will be laughing if he can persuade bargain midfielder to change his mind on Leeds United move - opinion

What was steady progress for Leeds United in the transfer market seems to have slowed down in the last week or so.

Leeds United kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Everton next week. Before them, Leeds United play AC Milan in a pre-season friendly in Ireland and it’s one final chance for Daniel Farke to get a look at his new-look side and decide what is the best fit for the opener against Everton at Elland Road.

Leeds United have signed seven new players so far this summer. The 49ers were spending money and bringing in players at a good pace but signings seem to have slowed down following the missed deal for Igor Paixao from Feyenoord.

It’s clear that Leeds are now focusing on the final third of the pitch, and there is a distinct lack of strikers and wingers and a new number 10 is also needed at Thorp Arch before the summer transfer window closes on September 1st.

One number 10 who Leeds United have liked for a long time is Gustavo Hamer at Sheffield United.

The latest on Gustavo Hamer to Leeds United

Throughout the last 12 months, Hamer has been linked with a move to Leeds United, and after Sheffield United missed out on promotion to the Premier League, it looks as though Hamer is set to leave Bramall Lane, with Leeds having been linked throughout the summer transfer window so far.

There have even been reports claiming that Hamer could leave Sheffield United for just £6.8million. However, the Whites have seemingly hit a setback in their pursuit of the Dutchman, after earlier reports revealed that Hamer wasn’t so keen on a move to Leeds United this summer.

Instead, it looks like the 28-year-old could opt for a move to the Eredivisie, with Dutch giants PSV rumoured to be courting the former Coventry City man. It could be bad news for Farke, whose preferred number 10 options seem to be dwindling by the day.

Leeds United’s search for a new number 10 will go right down to the wire

Throughout the summer, it has been reported that Leeds United will sign one of Hamer or Emi Buendia, but right now a move for neither player looks to be likely.

Speaking to Leeds United News recently, transfer expert Graham Bailey revealed how Buendia has played himself back into contention at Aston Villa, but that the Argentine could still leave at the end of the summer transfer window if he’s not featuring when the Premier League season starts.

Hamer, however, seems nailed on to leave after Sheffield United’s missed promotion, but where he ends up remains to be seen.

At £6.8million, and given his impressive 2024/25 season in the Championship which saw him earn the league’s Player of the Season award, Hamer would be many fans’ preferred choice to come in and replace Brenden Aaronson in that number 10 position.

Leeds now have Premier League football and a higher wage bracket to try and tempt players like Hamer, but he may be hesitant of the move given the fact that so many promoted teams come straight back down. Farke then simply has to work his magic to somehow tempt Hamer to Elland Road.

If not, he has to cast his net further to names such as Bilal El Khannouss who has become an active target for Leeds. One thing is for sure, and that is that Aaronson certainly needs to be upgraded before the end of the summer transfer window.
