Towards the end of last season, we covered reports from Portugal discussing Newcastle United’s interest in Benfica’s Vangelis Pavlidis.
Back in April, A Bola reported Benfica are expecting the Magpies or another English club to make an offer. The Lions were said to be worried about receiving a bid for the striker.
Newcastle haven’t made any advances for the 26-year-old as they were focusing on other targets. They lost Hugo Ekitiké to Liverpool and are now set to miss out on RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Šeško to Manchester United.
The latest claims from the UK reported the Magpies sent a scout to watch Pavlidis in his side’s 2-0 win over OGC Nice in the Champions League qualifiers on Wednesday.
Friday’s edition of Record and A Bola relays it and then claims Benfica have no intention to part ways with the Greece international, who has a €100m clause. The two reports warn that Newcastle have the finances to carry out his signing.
Jornal de Notícias partly echoes Record and A Bola’s claim that Benfica don’t intend to sell the frontman.
At the same time, the report states ‘everything will depend on the possible offer on the table’. This indicates Benfica could be open to selling the player if there’s a convincing offer on the table.
Another Portuguese newspaper, O Jogo, reports Newcastle haven’t approached Benfica over a move for Pavlidis.
Pavlidis scored 30 goals and registered 13 assists from 57 games last season.
