Colin Cowherd is latest media member to declare Kansas City Chiefs dynasty dead

Getting behind a microphone and declaring a sports dynasty dead before it’s entirely clear is always a tricky endeavor.

Just ask all the people who said Nick Saban’s Alabama dynasty was dead before they went on to win several more national titles.

That’s not stopping media members from tripping all over themselves to declare the Kansas City Chiefs’ dynasty officially over.

Last month, Emmanuel Acho posited that Kansas City had just entered the start of what will be an extended Super Bowl drought. Now, FS1’s Colin Cowherd is doubling down on the notion that the Chiefs’ dynasty years are behind them, even if they continue to be good.

“I think Kansas City, the dynasty part is over,” Cowherd said on Thursday’s episode of The Herd. “They may win a Super Bowl, but I think their division is too good to be a dynasty.

“I’ll give you an example. When Nick Saban was at Alabama, LSU couldn’t get the right coach. Auburn couldn’t get the right coach. Ole Miss couldn’t get the right coach for most of it. Tennessee couldn’t get the right coach, and he dominated. But then Georgia got Kirby Smart, and then Texas just came in with Sark, and Nick Saban didn’t look as dominating. Same thing happened to Urban at Florida when Nick Saban came in. Urban Meyer was dominating, and then Nick Saban went to a great program, and then Urban wasn’t dominating.”

Cowherd also noted that, despite the Chiefs’ long dominance of the AFC West, that window might be closing.

“Denver is going to be noticeably better,” he said. “The Raiders are going to be significantly better. Jim Harbaugh’s career, year two, everywhere he’s ever been. Year one, he changes the culture. Year two, he changes the personnel. He needs two years of drafting, two years of free agency. I just saw somebody the other day pick the Chargers to win the Super Bowl. I don’t know if they will, but they’ll be noticeably better than last year…”

It’s not as though there isn’t a good reason for people to predict the Chiefs’ dominance is about to end. The franchise was dominated in the Super Bowl, their stars are getting older, the AFC is catching up to them, and there’s a palpable sense of fatigue around the franchise for many. And this is before a new docuseries about the NFL team debuts on ESPN.

It’s just, you know, Freezing Cold Takes exists for a reason…
