Newcastle United want to sign 21-year-old club are actively trying to sell

Newcastle United are now weighing up a summer transfer move for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa after missing out on RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, according to The Athletic.

The Slovenian has opted to join Manchester United ahead of Newcastle, and the St James’ Park club are now looking elsewhere, with the Spain international emerging as an option.

The Magpies admire the 21-year-old Aghehowa but have yet to table a bid for him as manager Eddie Howe continues to ponder on his next move after several striking targets moved elsewhere.

The Porto star was close to moving to the Premier League last summer after Chelsea agreed a €40 million (£34.5m) deal with Atletico Madrid to sign him.

However, the proposed move fell through and he subsequently joined Porto for €15m. Aghehowa signed a five-year deal with the Portuguese top-flight club and it contains a €100m release clause.

Suitors may need to activate it to have any chance of signing this summer, and whether Newcastle have plans to do so remains to be seen.

The Toons had a bid of €82.5m (£71.5m) plus €2.5m in add-ons accepted by Leipzig on Tuesday for Sesko and could do open to doing business for a similar fee for the Porto star.

The 6ft 4in Aghehowa notched 27 goals in 45 games across all competitions last term and could fit perfectly into the Newcastle attack as they look to challenge in the Champions League next term.

Man United also once had him on their radar before opting to look elsewhere, and a move to the Premier League could appeal to the former Atletico Madrid striker.
