Aston Villa are sweating over Morgan Rogers’s fitness after their 4-0 win against AS Roma at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium on Wednesday.

Rogers, 23, limped off just minutes into the second half with an ankle injury as Unai Emery’s side eased to victory against the Italian giants.

Emery substituted Rogers into the game at half-time, hoping to give the England international vital minutes in preparation for the Premier League season kicking off next week.

However, Villa are now worrying over whether the former Middlesbrough star will even be fit to face Newcastle on 16 August.

Rogers faces weeks out

Rogers was one of the stars of the Premier League season last time out, so losing him for a prolonged period of time would be a huge blow for Aston Villa.

Dr Rajpal Brar is hopeful that the Halesowen-born attacker will be able to shake off his injury within a few days.

However, after watching footage of the Villa star’s injury, the injury expert reckons he could be looking at ligament damage and weeks on the sidelines.

“The best case here would be a knock and he’s day to day in terms of his assessment,” said Dr Brar to Villa News.

“The worst case is something ligamentous and he’s looking at weeks.

“While it doesn’t initially look like the latter, these things can develop, so it makes sense to play it by ear.”
