Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic says the club have held talks over signing former Manchester United star Brandon Williams on a permanent deal.

Tigers boss Jakirovic confirmed that City had offered Williams a contract in a bid to tie him down to the club for the season ahead and beyond.

Williams had been given a chance to resurrect his career at the MKM Stadium and played in home friendlies with Sunderland and Getafe. He continues to train at Cottingham having admitted that he's got his love back for football after a turbulent period.

The 24-year-old ex-United and Ipswich Town defender does have options elsewhere. He is understood to be mulling over those offers as he looks to take a big next step in a career that has stalled in recent years following a well-publicised court case which left him facing up to a suspended jail sentence.

Jakirovic says the club, and Williams, have time to make the right decision given he would be a free transfer. The defender also hasn't played a competitive game since December 2023.

The Bosnian hopes the fact City were the club prepared to offer him an olive branch, and a chance to get his career back on track, will work in their favour when it comes to Williams making a decision.

"He is very satisfied here," City's boss told Hull Live. "He has trained very, very well, and we have offered him and his agent a contract with our terms. We're waiting for the answer, and if everything is good, he'll sign. Right now, he's happy, so we will see what the future will bring."

Back in May, Williams was in court for dangerous driving and found himself given a three-year ban and a two-year jail term suspended for two years. His last outing came for Ipswich Town not far off two years ago, but the Tigers took him in last month and have tried to help get him back to the former, which saw him burst on the scene at Old Trafford and emerge as one of the top young players in the country.

"This is a very good opportunity for him," Jakirovic said. "I'm aware that we need to give him more time because he didn't play for one and a half years. For now, for him, it's most important that he is helped; he has trained good, so we will see.

"Of course (we gave him a second chance), because I think this is normal. This is human. I don't look so much at what happened before in the past, it's just today, the present and the future for me. This is the most important thing. In these circumstances, he can help us, we can help him, and this is perfect, I think the connection between me, him and the club (is good)."
