Report: Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Is ‘Pushing His Receivers’

The NFL world needs to be on notice about the Kansas City Chiefs again. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has the anger and the offensive firepower to do some damage against opposing defenses in the upcoming season.

Per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Chiefs believe Mahomes has ratcheted up his intensity during training camp this summer.

“This might sound corny, but the people here think Patrick Mahomes has had a look about him through the team’s three weeks at Missouri Western State University,” Breer wrote. “He’s being aggressive in pushing the ball downfield. He’s pushing his receivers. What that all translates to, we’ll see. But for now, it’s a way of bringing the team along with him, with a ratcheted-up intensity and focus from a team that didn’t really need anything extra to begin with.

“Last year, Kansas City had a vision for the offense that had Hollywood Brown and Xavier Worthy threatening defenses downfield, vacating space for Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce to feast on underneath. Injuries fouled that up in 2024. But it’s very much alive now, especially since… Depth is better at the skill spots, which should help the team sidestep last year’s issues, when the losses of Rice and Brown blew up that initial vision.”

Mahomes had his worst season statistically as a starter in 2024, throwing for 3,928 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Injuries to wide receivers Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown didn’t help. But probably the biggest issue was the offensive line.

All-Pro Joe Thuney is gone, but the Chiefs addressed the most glaring issue on the line when they drafted Ohio State offensive standout Josh Simmons in the first round. So far, he’s been praised at camp.

If Mahomes has time to throw to the Chiefs’ elite skilled players, Kansas City will be a threat to win another Super Bowl in February.
