Former Man United midfielder Paul Scholes has backed Liverpool to spend £150m on Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Jamie Carragher had questioned the Reds’ decision to pursue the Swedish international, having already recruited Hugo Ekitike, but Scholes said the Premier League champions should be trying to sign the world’s best players while they are in a position of strength:
“I know exactly what you mean, but no, you can’t turn it down]. When you win the league, a lot of teams relax. But when we (Man Utd) won the league, go again. You buy your Rio Ferdinands, we bought Wayne Rooney, your Berbatovs. You bring more quality, don’t you? Liverpool have done that. I agree with you, though, the planning seems weird.”

“The ambition now will be to be the best in Europe. Look, if you bring Isak into it, you’re going to have the best centre forward in the world, I think at this point. I know you’re saying, as a Liverpool fan, it feels a bit uncomfortable spending [so much] on Isak. As a United fan, I’d have him for £150m!”
Will Isak move to Liverpool this summer?
The way Newcastle are behaving in the transfer market, it appears they are resigned to losing him. Having failed to land RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, they have reportedly moved on to Porto’s Samu Aghehowa and PSG’s Randal Kolo Muani.
Isak is still not training with the first-team squad, and he will not play in the Magpies’ friendlies against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid.
Nunez’s departure adds money to the coffers
Having already received £65m from Bayern Munich for Luis Diaz, the Merseysiders are now expected to raise an additional £46m from the sale of Darwin Nunez to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
That adds £111m to the budget, which can be used to finance a substantial offer for Isak. It remains to be seen, though, whether the Reds are prepared to spend £150m on the striker.
