NFL receiver Josh Reynolds was targeted during a shooting last year while playing for the Denver Broncos. Court documents have now revealed why.
According to 9NEWS in Denver, Reynolds and two of his friends were shot last October while leaving a club because they were victims of mistaken identity.
The station reports that there was a $250,000 cocaine deal involving fake money that took place, and after the drug dealer found out that the money was fake, he enlisted others to get revenge.
After the drug deal took place in a hotel room, $37,000 worth of fake money was found by a hotel cleaning crew, as well as a money counter and white powder, according to 9NEWS.
According to documents viewed by 9NEWS, the plan was for the drug dealer’s crew to “[expletive] them up” for using fake money.
After Reynold’s Ford Bronco was shot and had bullet holes throughout it, “the video had to be taken and sent to their ‘general’ to prove the incident had been carried out,” according to the documents.
However, Josh Reynolds and his two friends were not involved in the drug deal and were not the intended targets of the shooting, according to investigators.
Reynolds’ car was attacked on I-25 after leaving a strip club in Glendale, Colorado on October 18, 2024, according to 9NEWS. He then pulled off of the interstate and was driving through neighborhoods, but the car continued to be attacked.
Reynolds suffered arm and head injuries from the shooting, according to the station.
Six suspects -- Luis Mendoza, Daniel Olivarez, Shawn Kane, Dirk Lisica-Lange, Matthew Magness and Alen Libedinsky -- have been charged with multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, attempted first-degree assault and illegal discharge of a firearm, per 9NEWS. There is also reportedly a juvenile who has not been identified because of his age who is facing similar charges.
Another suspect, Burr Charlesworth, pleaded guilty recently to a single count of conspiracy to commit first-degree assault. A ninth suspect, a 34-year-old man, remains at large.
Josh Reynolds appeared in five games for the Broncos last season, catching 12 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown. He also spent four games with the Jaguars last year, catching only one pass. He previously played for the Rams, Titans and Lions during his NFL career.
The former Texas A&M star has topped the 600-yard mark twice in a season -- once in 2020 with the Rams and once in 2023 with the Lions.
He signed with the New York Jets this offseason.
