Club backs out from Harvey Elliott transfer after initial talks

Tottenham Hotspur have stepped away from a move for Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott after holding early discussions, according to reports (viathe Times Paul Joyce).

The 22-year-old has been linked with a summer exit as the Reds reshape their forward options, but Spurs have apparently decided to look elsewhere — at least for now.

Elliott, who joined Liverpool in 2019, has drawn interest from several clubs in England and abroad.

Bundesliga side RB Leipzig are among those who have made contact this week. Tottenham were also in the mix and held exploratory talks, but the move never gained momentum.

This decision comes as Spurs face a fresh headache in attack. James Maddison’s ruptured ACL will keep him out for most of the season, and Heung-min Son’s recent switch to Los Angeles FC has left another creative gap.

It seemed like Elliott could be the extra playmaker they needed, but the north London club has decided to keep him off their shopping list for now.

Will Liverpool sell Harvey Elliott this summer?

Liverpool are still weighing their options. Elliott scored in the recent 4-1 friendly win over Athletic Club and seemed to wave goodbye to the Anfield crowd when subbed off. However, Arne Slot’s comments suggest the midfielder is not central to his plans.

“I think, we think, we already have a lot of attacking power in our team,” Slot said when listing his forward options — notably leaving out Elliott’s name.

With Luis Diaz gone, Diogo Jota’s tragic passing, and Darwin Nunez close to joining Al-Hilal, some might expect Elliott’s role to grow.

But Liverpool are still targeting another big signing, with Alexander Isak high on their list. If the right offer comes in, Elliott’s Anfield chapter could close before the transfer window shuts.

For now, Spurs have taken a step back — but in football, the transfer window can be a game of extra time. One injury, one failed deal, and Elliott’s name could be back on the team sheet of suitors.
