Barcola 'block' fear emerges as Liverpool make transfer decision on PSG winger

Liverpool are not expected to make a move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola despite their interest in the Frenchman, according to a report.

The 22-year-old was one of PSG's standout stars last season with 21 goals and 21 assists from 64 appearances in all competitions, including two helpers from six matches at the Club World Cup.

However, the rise of Desire Doue meant that Barcola found starts slightly harder to come by in the second half of the season, and he failed to make the first XI for their 5-0 thrashing of Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

Barcola still started 14 European matches and 27 Ligue 1 games for Les Parisiens in 2024-25, but four of his six appearances at the Club World Cup came as a substitute, including in the 3-0 final loss to Chelsea.

With Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also indispensable in Luis Enrique's attack, Barcola's future has been called into question, and a move to the Premier League has been strongly mooted.

Liverpool fear Barcola move could 'block' teenager's development

According to The Mirror, Liverpool are indeed admirers of the former Lyon man - who could be a potential alternative to Newcastle United's Alexander Isak - but the reigning English champions are not intending to formalise their interest.

As PSG still have Barcola under contract for three years, Liverpool supposedly believe that the European champions will not let him leave, and certainly not for anything less than a major profit on the £39m they paid for him in 2023.

Furthermore, the Reds are fearful that signing Barcola could block the progression of 16-year-old wonderkid Rio Ngumoha - who has been one of the shining lights of the Reds' pre-season campaign - to the first team.

As a result, a move for Barcola is considered 'unlikely' at this juncture, especially as Liverpool are still monitoring developments surrounding Isak's future at Newcastle and could make a move if the opportunity arises.

Unless another Premier League team comes forward with an acceptable offer, Barcola is expected to remain at PSG, where he has amassed 26 goals and 30 assists from 103 games over the past two years.

Assessing Ngumoha's rise to stardom at Liverpool

Even before pre-season kicked off, Ngumoha was already well-known to senior staff at Anfield, as Arne Slot selected the 2008-born phenom from the first whistle against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup.

The 16-year-old - who only joined the Reds' ranks from Chelsea in 2024 - became both Liverpool's youngest-ever starter in any competition and youngest-ever player in the FA Cup in that third-round win, before bursting onto the scene this summer.

Following an assist against AC Milan and a goal against Yokohama F. Marinos, Ngumoha stole the show against Athletic Bilbao, scoring one and setting up Al-Hilal-bound Darwin Nunez in a 4-1 Anfield victory.

The teenager's contributions both came inside the opening five minutes of that game, where he arguably did everything he could to prove that he belongs in the first team next season.

While the exits of Nunez and Luis Diaz - as well as Diogo Jota's tragic death - left holes that needed to be filled, the emergence of Ngumoha and signings of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike (and potentially Isak) means that a move for Barcola would make little sense right now.
