The Dallas Cowboys have not been able to shake the injury bug in training camp. Between multiple offensive lineman going down, including starting left tackle Tyler Guyton, and several defensive backs already on the PUP list, the Cowboys are without a lot of key pieces right now.
That trend continued on Thursday when rookie running back Jaydon Blue was carted to the cent with an apparent injury. Blue was able to walk to the locker room under his own power, but it appears that his day his done.
According to Nick Harris of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Blue took an awkward fall following a facemask from defensive end Sam Williams. Todd Archer of ESPN noted that Blue got "twisted to the ground" by the illegal hit, but the details of the injury are not known as of this writing.
Cowboys rookie RB Jaydon Blue leaves practice with an injury
UPDATE: Jaydon Blue did not return to practice, but he returned to the sidelines walking under his own power after a brief visit to the injury tent.
aydonBlue is back out on the field at practice. He’s out of uniform and wearing shorts and a long sleeve shirt. He’s walking under his own power.
Talk about taking all of the air out of a competitive practice.
Blue has been among the Cowboys' top performers in Oxnard. He has seen increased reps with the starters as a result of Miles Sanders missing the last several practices with a knee injury, but that was likely to happen anyway given how well he has played.
It's too early to say if Blue was pushing for the starting job - the Cowboys are likely to start Sanders or Javonte Williams regardless - but he is making a strong case.
While the details and severity are unknown, the timing of this injury could not have been much worse with Dallas' first preseason game coming up on Saturday against the LA Rams. The Cowboys likely plan to rotate all of their running backs in the exhibition You would hate to see Blue miss out on his first chance to show off his skills in a game setting.
Let's hope it's nothing serious and Blue is able to suit up on Saturday. It goes without saying that a potential serious injury would leave Dallas' backfield in a terrible spot.
