The Cleveland Browns have one of the more intriguing quarterback situations in the NFL, recently adding another name after the addition of Snoop Huntley. Unfortunately, the Browns face a tough decision, compounded by injuries to some of their players. Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel are both dealing with injuries, and Deshaun Watson will be out for much, if not all, of the season.
However, some believe that the six quarterbacks on the Browns roster will be short-lived, including Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox. Knox took a look at one player that each team could trade during the 2025 season, adding that Pickett could be the odd man out in their quarterback room.
“The Cleveland Browns are in the middle of a quarterback competition that involves Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel and rookie fifth-rounder Shedeur Sanders. It seems unlikely Cleveland will keep all three signal-callers on its active roster, though GM Andrew Berry has publicly said he is open to the idea…
“This will all likely leave Pickett as the odd QB out. The Browns gave up a fifth-round pick and backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson to acquire Pickett from the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason. They did so to take a flier on a 2022 first-round pick who suffered from a bad Pittsburgh Steelers offense in his first two seasons and may still have untapped potential,”he wrote.
Strangely enough, one could argue that Pickett actually has a chance to start for the Browns. At this point, it seems much more likely that Joe Flacco will get the bulk of starts, at least early on. He’s a veteran and proved a few years ago that he knew how to run this offense. While the Browns are in a much different position than they were a few years ago, he might give them their best opportunity to win.
Which QBs Will Be the Odd Men Out?
Regarding what the Cleveland Browns might do with Pickett and the other five quarterbacks on their roster, prior to adding Huntley, they already knew that it could’ve been an issue.
However, according to NFL.com, general manager Andrew Berry wasn’t too worried about it. Berry stated that the team needs a starting quarterback, and a competent one at that. Roster flexibility in this era allows them to have multiple quarterbacks on their roster.
How Many Quarterbacks Will the Browns Carry on the 53-Man Roster?
Essentially, he said that the Cleveland Browns could very well have five quarterbacks on their roster to start the season, even if some don’t believe it’s the right decision.
“We’ve largely looked at the last five spots of a roster as more developmental spots, and that could come from any position,”Berry said. “I also think with the roster flexibility nowadays, especially with the elevations that you’re able to have on the practice squad, there’s just more flexibility in terms of how to build your 48-man game-day roster where it’s maybe not as quite as restrictive as in the past. …
“If there are four that are 53-man worthy and we think it makes the most sense for us to keep, then we will.”
