One year ago, this wasn’t the kind of list anyone thought Dyami Brown would land on.

This ain’t 2024.

Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon put the Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver on his list of the NFL’s biggest “Free Agent Steals” headed into 2025.

Brown spent 4 mostly disappointing seasons with the Washington Commanders after they drafted him in the third round (No. 84 overall) of the 2021 NFL draft before he had a coming out party in last season’s playoffs as Washington advanced to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since 1991.

While Brown had regular season career highs in receptions (30) and yards (308) in 2024, it was his 14 receptions for 229 yards and 1 touchdown in his first 3 career playoff games that led to his deal with the Jaguars.

Before the playoffs, Brown was projected to land a free agent contract worth between $1 million to $3 million for 2025.

“After a slow start to training camp, Dyami Brown has put together two good practices in a row,” Sports Illustrated’s John Shipley wrote on July 31. “He made two explosive plays on Tuesday and then took it a step further on Thursday, having the best day of any of the wide receivers and showing good chemistry with Trevor Lawrence.”

Before 2024, Brown Was Possible Cut Candidate

It’s the second season in a row there’s been buzz around Brown before the regular season – just last year that buzz was around whether or not he was going to even make the 53-man roster.

“Away from a two-touchdown outing against the Titans in 2022, Brown has remained uninvolved in a rather underwhelming passing attack,” Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler wrote in August 2024.” “While the team has consistently searched high and low for consistent production at the position away from Terry McLaurin, Brown has found himself on the outside looking in as the season approaches.”

Brown now gets a clean slate in Jacksonville, on one of the NFL’s worst and youngest teams and with a first year head coach in former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen.

“You look at somebody that’s able to attack the field at all three levels,” Coen told ESPN’s Michael DiRocco on July 6. “(Brown) can go down the field on the post, in the go, in the pylons and be the top shelf, but also you can throw him a screen and he can go and do something with it. I can’t coach that. I can’t coach you to go and make three people miss after you’ve caught the ball … That’s what he can do.”

Fact: Commanders Could Use Brown Right Now

The iron of Brown leaving when he did is that the Commanders find themselves in a situation now where they could really use a player like him.

McLaurin is in the middle of an ugly contract dispute with the team and could very well be traded before the season begins. The Commanders traded for a legit WR2 in Deebo Samuel, but he’s a specialized player who doesn’t have downfield capability like a traditional outside receiver but is great catching passes in the flat or on short routes.

After that, it’s anybody’s guess who steps up, with veteran Noah Brown and second year wideout Luke McCaffrey leading the way.
