The Los Angeles Chargers face a major shift along their offensive line heading into the season.
Left tackle Rashawn Slater will miss the entire year after tearing his patellar tendon during practice.
The injury comes after Slater recently signed a huge contract extension.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh has turned to Jamaree Salyer to fill the void at one of football’s most critical positions.
“Chargers HC Jim Harbaugh praised OL Jamaree Salyer’s offseason, training camp and versatility, adding that Salyer will start at LT in Sunday’s preseason game vs the Saints,” Dan W. Sports wrote on X.

Slater will have surgery and faces a recovery timeline of 10-12 months. The Chargers placed him on injured reserve as they prepare for life without their premier left tackle.
Salyer, a sixth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has impressed coaches with his improved conditioning and ability to handle multiple positions.
His versatility makes him a solid choice to step into Slater’s role, and Harbaugh has expressed confidence in Salyer’s preparation and overall value to the offensive line.
Right tackle Joe Alt is a potential option to move to left tackle if needed. This flexibility allows the Chargers to maintain depth while adjusting to the significant loss.
Slater’s absence affects both pass protection schemes and the ground game. Los Angeles runs a physical offensive system under Harbaugh and coordinator Greg Roman that relies heavily on line play.
The team built much of their blocking strategy around Slater’s elite skills.
Despite the setback, the Chargers believe Salyer’s development, combined with their overall depth, can keep them competitive.
Salyer’s performance in preseason action will provide the first real test of how well the line can adapt to this major change.
