Garrett Greene was supposed to be the quarterback that led West Virginia back to relevance during the 2024 college football season and now he is catching passes for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a wide receiver. Life comes at you fast!
The former Mountaineers signal-caller is hoping to make a professional roster at a new position.
Greene, an undrafted free agent, cannot stop making plays during NFL training camp. It is hard to believe he was the one throwing the passes less than 10 months ago!
Where did Garrett Greene come from?
Greene rated as a three-star prospect in the recruiting Class of 2020. The Florida-native chose to play at West Virginia over 10 other offers from schools like Ole Miss, TCU, Georgia Tech and UAB.
It took some time for Greene to work his way into the starting lineup. He was finally tapped as the starter as a redshirt junior and led the Mountaineers to an 9-4 season behind 2,406 passing yards and 16 touchdowns in 2023. They had not won more than eight games since 2016 so it was rejuvenating.
However, the floor fell out from under them in 2024 so head coach Neal Brown got fired.
There were some moments of greatness but Garrett Greene turned back into a pumpkin. He threw a career-high 12 interceptions.
West Virginia finished at 4-7.
Off to the NFL!
Nobody was going to draft Greene as a quarterback after his disappointing redshirt senior year. Or, if a team did decide to take a flier, he wasn’t going to make it out of rookie minicamp with a job.
Credit to him, Greene was self-aware enough not to go down that path and decided to make a change!
The 23-year-old undrafted free agent signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a 5-foot-11, 200-pound “football player” with an undefined position. You could compare his role to that of Taysom Hill because they even had him returning punts back in May.

With that being said, Greene is taking the vast majority of his snaps at wide receiver. And he is making plays!
The former college football quarterback made a slick one-handed grab during positional drills that most signal-callers would not be able to make.

The most impressive play of Garrett Greene’s young NFL career saw him beat the defensive back on a go route down the sideline.

Here’s another look:
Cool story:
Garrett Greene has only played quarterback, until now.
He made the switch to WR in the NFL. He's been soaking up all the knowledge from CG and 13.
He told me he considers himself a 'football player,' not just a QB or WR.

This exact clip is going to turn heads at this time of year no matter who is catching that pass. It could be Mike Evans and I would think “wow, that was nice!” That’s what we do during training camp— overreact.
But this is a quarterback we’re talking about! Garrett Greene is willing to do whatever it takes to make it on the next level. Wouldn’t it be cool if this position change works out?
