Ex-NFL All-Pro suspended for illegal hits lands college football coaching job

Former NFL linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who was suspended multiple times for illegal hits during his NFL career, has landed a role on a college football staff.

Burfict has been hired as a defensive analyst at UNLV, according to the school’s website.

He will work under first-year Rebels head coach Dan Mullen, who left his role as an analyst at ESPN to take over the UNLV program.

Vontaze Burfict will also work under UNLV’s associate head coach, safeties coach and interim defensive coordinator, Paul Guenther.

Burfict and Guenther are being reunited as Guenther was the linebackers coach and defensive coordinator for Burfict when he played for the Bengals and Raiders.

Vontaze Burfict spent eight seasons in the NFL after starring at Arizona State during his college career. He earned Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors in 2013.

There’s no doubt that Burfict was extremely talented as a player, but he also struggled to stay on the field due to getting suspended multiple times for illegal hits.

He received 13 suspensions and fines during seven seasons with the Bengals, according to ESPN. Two of those suspensions were for illegal hits.

Burfict most recently played for the Raiders in 2019, but his season was cut short as he was suspended during the first month of the season for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Colts tight end Jack Doyle. The suspension was the longest ever for an on-field incident.

He has not played in the NFL since and appears to now be moving on to coaching.
