Brentford 2-2 Borussia Monchengladbach: perseverance nearly prevails as Bees end pre-season with draw

Brentford's pre-season drew to a close with a 2-2 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday night.

The Bees thought they had secured Keith Andrews' first win at the Gtech Community Stadium when Fabio Carvalho and Mikkel Damsgaard scored within a minute of each other to overturn a one-goal deficit.

However, a thunderous strike from Frank Honorat into the bottom corner in the 86th-minute meant both sides enter their respective seasons on the back of draws, after Grant-Leon Ranos initially gave them the lead.

While music could be heard blaring from afar in Gunnersbury Park, neither side had a reason to celebrate after an evenly-contested fixture in west London.

Story of the Game

It was a battle of the Premier League and Bundesliga's 10th-place finishers last season in west London as both sides concluded their pre-season preparations.

Andrews called upon a largely unchanged line-up from last weekend's win over QPR, with Hakon Valdimarsson replacing Caiohmin Kelleher in goal and Sepp van den Berg replacing Kristoffer Ajer at centre-back.

Kevin Schade was again unavailable after sustaining a knock in training, Yoane Wissa remains outcasted amid speculation of a departure, and Jordan Henderson returned to the squad after an illness last week.

Brentford began the game on the front foot as they sought to break down a well-structured Gladbach side with Carvalho and Damsgaard acting as the creative outlets.

The Bees had a few half-chances in the early stages that amounted to nothing, allowing the visitors to grow into the game and attempt to exploit their opponents in transition.

It was Soanes' side that had the best of the early chances as Kevin Stoger's in-swinging free-kick set Haris Tabakovic up perfectly, leaving Valdimarsson stranded, but he was unable to get his header on target.

Set-pieces were proving a valuable outlet for Brentford and so nearly earned them the lead as van den Berg's header was tipped over by Moritz Nicolas after towering above everyone to get to Jensen's corner.

Gladbach were the ones to take the lead on the half-hour mark; a well-worked move down the right concluded with Joe Scally's deflected strike falling nicely to Ranos at the back post for an unopposed tap-in.

It was a frustrating first half for Andrews' side as front four of Keane Lewis-Potter, Damsgaard, Carvalho, and Thiago struggled to click, while stray passes in the build-up creating openings for Gladbach.

Kayode's attempt to beat his man seeing the right-back kick the ball against his standing leg and out of play for a goal-kick before half-time epitomised the Bees' fortune in the first half.

Both sides had a chance to score within five minutes of the restart.

Carvalho saw his header comfortably saved within the opening minute, then the Bees were again caught napping as Gladbach failed to convert Stoger's quick free-kick - much to Nathan Collins' frustration.

Brentford were left perplexed as to how they didn't equalise before the hour as back-to-back Jensen throw-ins fell to Damsgaard inside the six-yard box, but he was twice denied by a point-blank range save.

The Premier League side's perseverance prevailed as the game was turned on its head in the 70th-minute when Carvalho and Damsgaard scored within a minute of one another.

Carvalho converted from close range after Collins' header from Jensen's free-kick found him inside the area before Damsgaard capitalised on a keeper error to put the Bees ahead.

Gladbach almost issued an immediate response directly from a corner, with in-swinging attempt evading Valdimarsson but was cleared at the back post by Thiago in what was his last action of the night.

Seoanes' side did equalise late on, however, as Honorat received the ball on the edge of the area before firing an unstoppable strike into the bottom corner to end pre-season with a draw.
