Bears defense bullies Dolphins, QB Tua Tagovailoa in joint practice.

Tremaine Edmunds jumped in front of [Dolphins](https://chicago.suntimes.com/bears/2025/08/08/bears-qb-caleb-williams-up-and-down-in-his-gameday-practice-friday) quarterback Tua Tagavailoa’s pass at the goal line Friday and began a juggling routine.

The [Bears](https://chicago.suntimes.com/bears) linebacker tried to corral a ball that bounced off his hands once, then twice, then again. He ran down the field bobbling the pass — cornerback Nahshon Wright even looked tempted to help — before finally squeezing it. If the Bears were playing a game — and not a joint practice against the Dolphins that they treated like a game — Edmunds might have had a 100-yard pick-six.

“He tried to make it as dramatic as possible,” safety Kevin Byard joked. “I think that was something good for the fans. He caught the ball like seven times. But it was just a good ending to the day that we had.”

The Bears defense was the best unit on either team in Friday’s joint practice against the Dolphins, playing a rough-and-tumble man defense in their first test of training camp.

“I think if we play the way we practiced today on defense, we’re gonna be pretty damn good,” Byard said.

Tagovailoa had thrown only one interception all training camp. Friday, he threw three, capped by Edmunds’ juggling pick. He was playing without all-world receiver Tyreek Hill, who sat out with an oblique injury. Jaylen Waddle, the Dolphins’ second-best receiver, left practice briefly after a big hit from Tyrique Stevenson.

The Bears shoved around the Dolphins’ receivers, both during and after plays.

Byard fought with Dee Eskridge, grabbing his facemask, after the receiver tried some extra-curriculars while blocking in a red-zone drill.

“I made sure I had him and let him know that he’s a little boy,” he said.

Stevenson started fighting, too. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel ran into the fray, trying to break up another fight. Earlier in the day, two Dolphins players tried to fight each other — not the opponent — on the sideline.

“They might’ve been frustrated with themselves,” Byard said. “I don’t know. We were over there high fiving, having a good time.”

### Injury update

Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon missed practice with a hamstring injury, while center Doug Kramer remained out with a foot problem. Nose tackle Andrew Billings came off the field but eventually returned.

Cornerback Jaylon Johnson, sidelined all camp with what the Bears are calling a leg injury, watched from the sideline, the way he did at “Family Fest” on Sunday. Before Sunday, he hadn’t been spotted during a practice all throughout training camp.
