Patriots start three rookies in preseason opener vs. Commanders

FOXBORO — The Patriots’ offense was supposed to get the ball first in Friday’s preseason opener against the Commanders, but rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson had other plans.

Henderson ripped off a 100-yard kick return for a touchdown to open Friday’s game. That means we got a look at the Patriots’ defense first.

Here was the Patriots’ starting defense in Week 1 of the preseason:

DT Milton Williams, DT Khyris, Tonga, DE Keion White, OLB Truman Jones, LB Robert Spillane, LB Christian Elliss, CB Marcus Jones, CB Alex Austin, S Jabrill Peppers, S Kyle Dugger, S Jaylinn Hawkins. CB DJ James came off the bench for Elliss on third down.

The Patriots’ starting offense featured three rookies: LT Will Campbell, LG Jared Wilson and RT Marcus Bryant. They were surrounded by QB Drake Maye, RB Rhamondre Stevenson, WR Mack Hollins, TE Hunter Henry, TE Austin Hooper, TE Jack Westover, C Garrett Bradbury and RG Mike Onwenu. WR DeMario Douglas and WR Kayshon Boutte came in for Hooper and Westover on third down. Henderson also saw snaps for Stevenson.
