Lions’ offensive tackle depth appears to take another hit before preseason game

ATLANTA -- The Detroit Lions were already short-handed at offensive tackle entering their preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night.

Dan Skipper (ankle) and Jamarco Jones (ankle) are dealing with injuries suffered in the last week. Taylor Decker (shoulder) continue to work back from offseason surgery, and wasn’t going to play in the preseason anyway.

Now, it appears that depth has taken another hit. Justin Herron suffered a pre-game injury during warmups. The Associated Press captured a photo of the offensive tackle being attended to on the field. Team officials confirmed he suffered an injury but did not have any other details.

There are photos circulating on social media of Herron leaving with an air cast on his right arm.

Giovanni Manu was already in line for an increased role in the team’s second preseason game. Undrafted rookie Mason Miller and third-year pro Colby Sorsdal are the other options likely to fill those gaps, if needed.

Manu had been working with the first-team offense at left tackle after Jones suffered an ankle injury in Monday night’s practice. Skipper suffered an ankle injury in last week’s Hall of Fame Game, as well.

“He’ll probably be down for about a week, got his ankle a little bit,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell said of Skipper. “Shouldn’t be long term, but he’s going to need to lay off of it for a little bit here.”
