Opinion: Perfect for Manchester United, 81-cap enforcer quietly sold last week for £8.6m

Manchester United have had a busy summer transfer window so far, with the Old Trafford outfit spending big to bolster the club’s attacking options.

Benjamin Sesko joining United was a statement of intent by the Reds Devils, with the Slovenia international following Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Nunes as new players at the Theatre of Dreams.

Ruben Amorim will have been frustrated that United were goal-shy in 2024-25, scoring only 44 goals in 38 games, with the club clearly looking to address the issue this summer.

However, despite most United fans being elated with the attacking reinforcements that have arrived, the Reds Devils’ defence surely needs to be bolstered with new faces.

United ended last season with a negative goal difference, courtesy of conceding 54 times in the Premier League.

Lisandro Martinez suffered persistent injury worries, while with Amorim playing three centre-halves, it feels like United need more options at the heart of their defence.

Perfect signing Milan Skriniar joins Fenerbahce instead

Milan Skriniar spent the second half of last season on loan at Fenerbahce after falling out of favour at European champions Paris Saint-Germain.

The 30-year-old Slovakia international made the move to Turkey permanent last week, joining the Istanbul giants for the relatively modest fee of £8.6 million.

Skriniar was once adjudged to be among Europe’s elite central defenders, excelling for Inter Milan over six seasons.

The no-nonsense defender won one Scudetto and two Coppa Italia during his time in Serie A, while the experienced centre-half was also a key member of the Slovakia squad during Euro 2024.

Welcome back to the Fenerbahçe family, Milan Škriniar.

We are pleased to announce that our club has reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain and Slovak international Milan Škriniar for the player’s permanent transfer.

With United in need of leaders in the dressing room and extra options at centre-half, Skriniar represented a low-cost option and would have added experience and a winning mentality.

Although the additions of Sesko, Nunes and Mbeumo make United a more dangerous side on the front foot, the Old Trafford fans will also hope defensive reinforcements are on their way before the close of the transfer window.
