Sport, some devotees claim, is the fullest, most authentic representation or analogy for human life, in all its messy glory and tragedy. If this be so, soccer is the fullest, most authentic of all.
It’s the de facto world game, after all – common pastime of humanity, regardless of where you’re from. Association football, calcio, fitba, le foot, futbal, sakka, o jogo bonito, and a million other names: the sport is played and/or passionately followed by, no exaggeration, billions of people around the planet. As was recently pointed out by one journalist, at this point it’s probably the most popular thing in human history.
