Wolves have an important few weeks ahead of them on the transfer front

Wolves are in the hunt for some new faces over the coming weeks. They have until the end of the transfer window on Monday 1st September to get some players through the door. Vitor Pereira could do with some more quality in his ranks, especially following Matheus Cunha’s exit to Manchester United.

The Midlands turned to Pereira during last season and he has since made a positive impression. He was picked as their replacement for Gary O’Neil and has done well. The Portuguese boss managed to keep them in the Premier League with ease in the end.

Wolves target Nantes forward Matthis Abline

Wolves are ‘looking’ into a move for Nantes striker Matthis Abline this summer, according to The Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath. They are being linked with a move for the player. He has also been on the radar of top flight new boys Sunderland over recent times amid his £10million valuation, as per Mackem News.

Journalist McGrath has posted on X: “Wolves are looking at a deal for France U21 forward Matthis Abline from Nantes. The 22yo strong option to bolster attack through middle or from wide, with 11 goals last season.”

Abline, 22, joined Nantes back in 2023 on an initial loan deal that was later made permanent. He hasn’t looked back since and has become one of their key players. However, they could face a battle to keep hold of him now amid attention from elsewhere.

The ex-France youth international has scored 16 goals in 60 games for the Ligue 1 outfit, 11 of which came in the last campaign. He is under contract until 2028. Therefore, they are under no pressure to sell him anytime soon and can wait for the right offer to come in for his signature.

Abline started his career with spells as a youngster at Landemontais and Carquefou. Rennes snapped him up in 2018 and he rose up through their ranks. He was a regular for his previous team at various different youth levels before breaking into their B team.

He was loaned out to Le Havre and Auxerre to get some experience, as well as Nantes. He later played 25 games during his time at Roazhon Park. The Angers-born man found the net on three occasions.

Would Matthis Abline suit Wolves?

If Wolves signed Abline, he would help plug the gap left by Cunha’s departure to Old Trafford. They have a lot of goals to replace and need to get their recruitment spot on. The player would compete with Jorgen Strand Larsen for a place in the starting XI if he arrived.

He would give Pereira more depth up top and another option to pick from in games. Abline should be in confident mood after an impressive last term for Nantes. However, as with any player from abroad, it may take him a while to adapt to life in England and patience would be required.

Wolves may also need to see off competition from new league rivals Sunderland if they were to get him. The Black Cats have been going for it with their transfers recently under Regis Le Bris. They beat Sheffield United in the play-off final at Wembley back in May with Tommy Watson scoring their winner.
