Arne Slot responds to reporter's question about Newcastle United star Alexander Isak

It is no secret that Liverpool want to sign Newcastle United star Alexander Isak this summer.

Isak wants to leave Newcastle United and Liverpool have had a huge offer rejected for the Sweden striker.

While there have been claims that the Reds are willing to walk away from talks due to the cost involved, it remains to be seen if the Premier League champions make another bid for Isak.

Newcastle would reportedly only risk selling the wantaway forward if they can sign a replacement this summer. As supporters will be more than aware by now, there is no absolute guarantee of that.

Right now, there’s an impasse. Isak wants to leave but Newcastle have so far given little indication that they would be willing to cash in despite an ugly saga unfolding.

Given the situation is what it is, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Arne Slot delivered quite a diplomatic answer on Isak.

Arne Slot refuses to speak about Alexander Isak interest

The Liverpool boss held a press conference ahead of Sunday’s Community Shield against FA Cup winners Crystal Palace.

During the discussion with various reporters, the Dutchman was asked about the prospect of signing the Newcastle star this summer.

Slot refused to comment, which is fairly natural from opposition managers in this kind of position. Still, it is noteworthy given that Newcastle were baffled by Liverpool’s public pursuit of Isak.

“As you know, from me and I think every manager works like this, you never talk about players who are not yours,” he said.

“So, I can talk to you about Hugo [Ekitike] who we signed recently and has done very well until right now.

“We are very happy with the squad we have.”

Newcastle United’s stance on Alexander Isak now

Isak could stay at Newcastle and, until Liverpool bid again, that looks likely.

The strange thing about the situation is that there has not been an immediate follow up from the Anfield giants.

Clearly, they may be waiting for Newcastle to sign a replacement before trying again, but that leaves Isak in limbo.

Sympathy for the striker will no doubt be hard to find among the fanbase this summer and not without justification.

If Newcastle don’t sign a replacement – and it’s hard to confidently suggest they will given all that’s gone on this summer – it could be a very messy situation next season indeed.
