Manchester City player on front page over transfer temptation – Guardiola worried about losing him

Over the past few weeks, the Spanish media covered Real Madrid’s interest in Manchester City’s Rodri.

The midfielder returned from a serious injury in May and has a contract until 2027. On July 23rd, [Mundo Deportivo reported](https://sportwitness.co.uk/manchester-city-work-to-finalise-players-renewal-asap-no-desire-to-sell/) Manchester City don’t intend to sell and are working on his renewal.

He’s on the front page of today’s [AS](https://as.com/), with ‘Rodri’s future open’ written in bold. It’s also said the idea of moving back to Spain tempts the former Atlético Madrid man.

The Spain international is aware of Manchester City’s lucrative offer until 2029 on the table. The newspaper, without mentioning figures, claim he’ll be the highest paid midfielder in Europe if he were to accept it.

Rodri hasn’t made the final decision on his future and isn’t in a rush. This should give Real Madrid hope as both the club and Xabi Alonso are keen on signing him.

Manchester City are said to be aware of Los Blancos’ desire to sign the 29-year-old, and it has set off alarm bells at the Etihad.

The prospect of losing Rodri seemed impossible a few months ago, but that’s no longer the case. AS say there’s ‘nerves at the Etihad due to Real Madrid’s appearance’.

If Rodri were to reach next summer without signing an extension, AS believe Manchester City will then be forced to sell, to avoid losing him for free in 2027. In that case, his price will be lowered, making it easier for Real Madrid to sign him.

The report states Manchester City want to avoid this scenario ‘under any circumstances’ and their intention is to accelerate the renewal process. However, the player will have the final say and for now, his future at the Etihad is more open than ever.

On Friday, Pep Guardiola confirmed Rodri suffered another setback and won’t return until September’s international break. AS haven’t mentioned this in their report.
