Who is Dilane Bakwa? The £30m Strasbourg winger on Leeds United’s transfer radar

Leeds United hold an interest in Strasbourg winger Dilane Bakwa, though face rival competition. Nottingham Forest are admirers of the 22-year-old, albeit have recently seen a £24million offer knocked back.

The French club are wanting between £26m and £30m for their asset. As for Leeds, no advancements have been made towards Bakwa, though he is on the radar.

The attacker played almost exclusively on the right wing last season, scoring six goals and assisting nine more in 30 Ligue 1 matches. Bakwa, whose contract runs until 2027, can play on the left, though hasn’t started a game there since March last year.

There have been indications from contacts in France that suggest the youngster is open to a move to the Premier League. Bakwa is described as an exciting player who looks to cut between the lines and play positively.

Indeed, he provides an average of four shot-creating actions per game and fires in around two shots per 90 minutes. He finished last season with an xG ratio of +1.3. and when it comes to expected assists, his score sits at +1.4.

Bakwa’s shooting accuracy - percentage of shots on target - sits at 42.3%, which is his highest single-season return for three years but means he misses the target more often than hits it.

This is perhaps explained by his average shot distance from goal of 21.3 yards - or outside of the penalty area. A pass completion total of 72.9 per cent also underlines his desire to take risks.

Bakwa is entrusted to deliver set pieces, with 97 free-kicks and 122 corners - both out-swinging and in-swinging - taken over the past two league seasons. Going the other way, the winger is deft at intercepting balls, with at least 15 of them in each of the past three seasons.

Conversely, just 39.4 per cent of his take-ons are successful and he mis-controlled the ball 60 times last season, significantly up from the 49 instances the campaign before - though his aerial duel succession at 57.9% is notable for a winger.

So there is a balance between potential and what his current output is, but Strasbourg clearly value him at a price. Nottingham Forest are expected to come back in with another bid, meaning Leeds might have to draw a conclusion on Bakwa before long.
