**Manchester United**’s summer chase for a talented midfielder has taken a twist. Brighton are making it crystal clear that Carlos Baleba will only leave for £115m.
Baleba still has three years on his contract. He joined from Lille for £23m two seasons ago. Now, his stock has grown immensely. Brighton chief Paul Barber has even dismissed talk of a United approach. Although, insiders claim the Red Devils have been sounding out a move.
Head coach Ruben Amorim is looking to inject energy into his 3-4-3 midfield pivot. The young playmaker fits the bill, especially after Manuel Ugarte’s underwhelming pre-season. Yet, Old Trafford’s decision-makers must dig deeper than ever before, due to the Seagulls’ stance.
Spending spree despite cost cuts
The irony won’t be lost on fans. Earlier this year, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe warned that without his strict financial measures, United could face big financial issues. Since his arrival, over 450 staff have been let go, perks have been reduced back. And even basics like training ground meals and office paper have been trimmed.
Meanwhile, ticket prices have also gone up. Despite that, the club has splashed serious cash in the transfer market. This summer alone, Man Utd have brought in Matheus Cunha for £62.5m, Bryan Mbeumo for £71m, and Diego Leon for £7m. Additionally, a £74m deal for Benjamin Sesko is almost sealed.
A fan even launched a GoFundMe fund raiser to raise funds for Baleba’s signing. Although, the sums needed are well beyond crowdfunding dreams. If United go all in, they’ll be taking a huge gamble on a player yet to prove himself over a full PL season. But, he could likely bring spark to their midfield.
