‘Full of challenges’ - Bruno Guimaraes releases statement amid Newcastle United struggles

Newcastle United were held 2-2 by La Liga club Espanyol at St James’ Park last night.

Bruno Guimaraes has told supporters the team “needs your support more than ever” after Newcastle United were held by Espanyol.

Jacob Murphy looked to have given the Magpies their first pre-season win on 77 minutes. However, the visitors struck back in the dying embers to continue Newcastle’s underwhelming Premier League preparations.

Eddie Howe’s men have drawn three and lost two during the off-season and face Atletico Madrid in their final tune-up game this evening. With the fixtures taking place in consecutive days, Newcastle are relying on a string of youth players given their threadbare squad.

Newcastle United transfer woes

Since the turn of the year, Miguel Almiron, Lloyd Kelly, Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson have left, with only Anthony Elanga arriving. The Magpies were struggling for numbers regardless of the chaotic summer that has unfolded.

Alexander Isak is also wanting out, leaving Will Osula as the club’s only active striker. Howe was keen to bolster his Toon ranks, with the Champions League expected to take its toll on the squad.

Newcastle remain in the market and are hopeful of adding quality in several positions. But a multitude of setbacks has, understandably, damaged confidence on Tyneside.

Bruno Guimaraes message

Posting on Instagram, Guimaraes urged Newcastle fans to rally behind the team, with “challenges” lying ahead next season. He wrote after the Espanyol draw: “Happy to be back home. A lot of work ahead. We need your support more than ever for this season full of challenges. Howay the lads.”

“I feel that is the only way we are going to get where we want to go, which is to maximise quality over quantity. It has been a challenging summer as you know.

“We have missed out on loads of different targets for different reasons. But we are still very competitive and we are still in there trying to bring good players to the club, that won't change until the window shuts."
