A call that never came - crossing the Derby County and Nottingham Forest divide

Nathan Tyson runs past Derby fans with a corner flag after Forest's victory in 2009

It is one of the fiercest rivalries in the country and one day there will be a time when Derby County and Nottingham Forest will lock horns once again.

The East Midlands derby has produced some compelling tales on the pitch in which there have been thrashings and moments of controversy that have dominated the headlines.

It is a long-standing rivalry stretching back through the decades and the occasional transfer of players between the two clubs has added to the tension. It's not a divide that is not often crossed and with good reason given the close proximity of the two clubs, but it has happened and will no doubt happen again at some point in the future.

And here DerbyshireLive looks at the five players who have most recently crossed the divide to play for both Nottingham Forest and Derby County.

Tyrese Fornah

The for an undisclosed fee and he was the latest player to have crossed the divide.

But had no qualms about making the switch despite having been with the Reds since he was 17 before leaving for the Rams seven years later. He was tipped to have a bright future at Forest, but their promotion to the Premier League meant his chances were always going to be limited.

And despite the fierce rivalry between the teams, Fornah said he had no problems with doing the deal.

"There was no apprehension about the move," he said when he arrived. "For me this was an amazing opportunity and something that I can't wait to get started with. I had an amazing time with Forest, I've been there since I was 17 and come through the ranks before progressing into the first-team so for me it's just about football and enjoying my football and being somewhere I'm appreciated. That's the main thing for me."

Fornah initially showed promise with an outstanding performance against Blackpool in a 3-1 victory but a mistake against Cheltenham which led a goal in a 1-1 draw put him on the backfoot. Since then he has found it hard to nail down a regular place in the team as Derby challenged for promotion back to the Championship. Derby released him in the summer and he is now playing for Northampton Town.

Jamie Ward

Jamie Ward joined Forest from Derby County in 2015. After a brief loan spell with the Rams for the 2010/11 season, Ward's move to Pride Park was made permanent.

His first goal as a full Derby County forward was against Forest as the Rams won 2-1 at the City Ground in September 2011. Ward played a somewhat controversial role in matches against Forest and it was a shock when he departed Derby for the City Ground in July 2015.

Discussing the transfer in June 2020, Ward said he would not have joined the Reds had he been offered a new contract with Derby. He "(Steve) McClaren was sacked three weeks after the season but I’d already received my letter from the club to tell me they weren’t taking the option of the contract.

"We spoke to clubs and I’d already decided I’d sign a four-year deal at Forest when I was on holiday in Thailand. But when I was away I got the message saying he’d (Steve McClaren) been sacked.

"It got a bit strange for me because someone at the club I know well said people had been asking about me and one day, I had three calls from people involved around the club. I thought it was leading to them wanting me back. If it was, I’d have not signed the deal at Forest and walked straight back in. But unfortunately that call didn’t come."

Nathan Tyson

Tyson seemed to be devoted to Forest. That was, however, until he made a controversial move to Derby County in 2011. The 39-year-old first joined the Reds on loan from Wycombe Wanderers before turning his loan spell permanent in 2006.

He wrote himself into Forest folklore with his jubilant celebrating of an East Midlands derby victory over the Rams. His exuberant celebrations - where he waved a corner flag in front of Derby fans at the City Ground - led to him receiving a suspension and fine.

Tyson was a fan favourite on the banks of the Trent having made more than 200 appearances for the Reds and for his role in Forest's promotion from League One. Speaking about his controversial move, he said: "I had not heard anything from (manager) Billy Davies but then I hear that Billy's job is under threat.

"So I am thinking 'wow, do I want to be at Forest without Billy Davies'. I wasn't too sure. Talks happened with Derby, and I am still waiting for Forest to phone me - they've got my number.

"The call didn't come, and Derby are pushing me now. I said to my dad, 'dad what other clubs?' He said Burnley are interested. So I had talks with Burnley, never heard back from them again. Millwall are interested. I talked to Millwall, never heard back from them again.

"It wasn't a money thing because I was very happy to take the money they were offering, and it was a lot less than Derby were offering and it was less than Forest were paying me at the time."

Kris Commons

Having been born in Nottinghamshire, it would have been controversial for Commons to cross the East Midlands divide. He made more than 100 appearances and scored 32 times for the Reds but his move to Derby County from Forest in 2008 caused a public outcry.

The attacking midfielder's contract had expired at the City Ground and Commons was feeling insecure about his Forest future. Despite being "desperate" to remain with Forest, he was forced to swap red for white and join Derby.

He told "I was going through a lot of personal problems and I was desperate to stay with Forest, desperate. I was born and raised in Nottinghamshire and I wanted to play for them for as many years as I possibly could."

He added: "I had to make up a decision that didn’t go down well with the Forest faithful but I felt like I’d been pushed into a corner where I couldn’t get out of."

Robert Earnshaw

Derby County broke their transfer record in June 2007 when they signed Rob Earnshaw from Norwich City. His goalscoring exploits in East Anglia made him a wanted asset but he struggled to make an immediate impact at Derby and was in and out of the squad.

As a result of his poor spell in Derbyshire, Earnshaw moved to Forest in May 2018 on a three-year deal. His form in front of goal struggled to pick up pace but eventually his efforts bore fruit. He scored six goals in the final 12 games of the season, including two in Forest's 5-2 victory over Derby.
