Benfica want to sign Antony from Manchester United
The 2024/25 season once again disappointed all of us United fans. Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League and lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final. Then being ruled out of European competition for 2025/26 was no less than a shock for supporters like us. Ruben Amorim took charge of the team in the middle of the last season. There was hope that maybe something would improve, but the situation remained the same.
The club have been declining steadily for the last two seasons. Defensive instability, lack of edge in midfield and lack of consistency in attack are taking us away from the identity that was formed during Sir Alex Ferguson’s era. Amorim’s arrival brought some balance to the structure, but that too happened late. Reaching the final in the Europa League raised the hopes of the team and the fans, but losing again is now becoming a habit.
Antony Corrundrum continues
The club have completed the signings of Matheus Cunha, and Brya Mbeumo. Meanwhile, Benjamin Sesko is also set to join the squad, but the club are still trying to get rid of deadwood players, and one of them is Antony. The latest news is that efforts to remove Antony from the club have begun. According to a report by CNN Portugal’s Bruno Andrade, Benfica have contacted Antony twice in the last few days. United are currently pushing for a permanent transfer, while Benfica want to secure him on loan first.
Benfica want to sign Antony from Manchester United.
Benfica has made two concrete approaches in recent days to Manchester United to discuss a possible negotiation of Antony
Amorim does not see the 25-year-old right-winger in his plans. United currently want to sell hthe Brazilian for around €50 million. This is the same Antony who was taken on loan by Real Betis last season, and he scored nine goals and gave six assists in 26 matches. Although RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Brighton are also among his options, Benfica seem to be the frontrunner right now. However, we have been struggling to offload him.
Will Antony be able to find a new destination?
From our point of view, Antony’s departure has to be finalised this summer. Amorim has made it clear that he has no trust in Antony. In such a situation, Benfica’s arrival is a relief for us. Betis have already used him, and Benfica would like to get a player who can make an immediate impact.
However, therein lies the problem – the €50 million asking price. Antony is no longer the kind of player that any club would bid for. Benfica are not financially strong enough to spend such a huge amount in one go. That is why the negotiations are only on loan. United now have to get down to business and come up with a viable deal for Antony.
It is foolish to keep a player who is not in the manager’s plans. Antony is no longer part of Manchester United’s future, and that is clear. If Benfica are willing to take him, the club should make the deal happen instead of insisting on a higher price. However, the problem is that every interested club want him on loan and that is a big headache.
