Leeds United’s promising young striker, Mateo Joseph,, has broken his silence following confirmation of a season-long loan to RCD Mallorca — a move that comes after a period of limited opportunities at Elland Road.
The 20-year-old joined Leeds from Espanyol in January 2022 with high expectations, quickly making an impression in the Under-21s before earning his first-team debut. His sharp movement, work rate, and eye for goal saw him tipped as one of the club’s brightest prospects. However, competition for places, tactical choices under Daniel Farke, and injuries meant Joseph never secured a regular starting spot.
Last season, with Joel Piroe leading the line, Joseph found himself on the fringes. Even in their EFL Championship title-winning campaign last season, his appearances were sporadic - often coming late in matches. Leeds valued him highly but recognised that consistent senior minutes were crucial for his development.
That opportunity is expected to come in La Liga. RCD Mallorca — a club known for giving young attacking players the platform to grow — stepped in to offer Joseph a season-long loan. Importantly, Sky Sports News and other outlets have reported there is no purchase option in the deal, signalling Leeds’ intention to reassess him next summer.
In a heartfelt Instagram message, Joseph reflected on his journey: “*My time at Leeds United has shaped me both on and off the pitch… I would have preferred things to end differently. There are situations that haven’t been easy, and sometimes not everything depends on you… I leave motivated and thankful, knowing this is just another step on the journey.*”
While he hinted at challenges behind the scenes, Joseph remains grateful for his time at the club and is determined to return stronger. For now, his focus is on making an impact in Spain — and proving to Leeds that he’s ready for a bigger role when he returns.
