Newcastle United have made Porto striker Samu Aghehowa a target in the summer transfer window, but GMS sources understand any move for the 21-year-old is expected to be anything but straightforward.
The Magpies have been tracking Samu’s rise for some time, with the forward enjoying a standout campaign last season in Portugal.
His pace, sharp movement and clinical finishing have made him one of Porto’s most important players, and his performances have been key to their push for domestic glory. It’s no surprise he’s now attracting concrete Premier League interest, but Newcastle will know that convincing Porto to part with him will take a significant financial commitment.
Newcastle Eyeing Move for Aghehowa
Samu Omorodion in action for Porto
Porto are delighted with Samu’s development, and see him as a cornerstone of their attack going forward. The player himself is happy at the Estádio do Dragão, and sources close to the club insist there is no intention to sell unless a very high offer lands on the table – one big enough to make them seriously consider breaking up their strike force.
While Porto have faced financial struggles in recent years, there has been some recovery. Even so, a potential sale of Samu could provide an immediate boost to their long-term stability, giving them the flexibility to invest in other areas of the squad.
Given his age and potential, Samu, who has been described as an "absolute powerhouse" and "elite" is seen as one of the club’s most valuable assets, and any buyer would need to meet a steep valuation to have a chance of getting a deal done.
For Newcastle, the admiration is real, but the fee involved could be a stumbling block.
The Magpies are aware they may face competition from elsewhere in Europe, and rival interest could push the price even higher.
With the summer window now in full swing, Porto remain focused on preparing for the new season with Samu leading the line. They see him as a player who can spearhead their title challenge and make a difference in Europe, meaning any approach from Newcastle would have to be not just ambitious, but irresistible.
Until then, Newcastle’s interest will remain just that: interest, unless they’re ready to test Porto’s resolve with a serious bid.
