Three years after he arrived, Liverpool have agreed to sell Darwin Nunez to Al-Hilal. The Saudi Arabian club are set to pay £46.3m (€53m) plus bonuses provided all goes to plan.
Nunez opened his Reds career with 15 goals in his first season followed by 18 in his second. The Uruguayan has been under plenty of scrutiny, however, over a number of missed chances and last season when Arne Slot came in to replace Jurgen Klopp, he ended 2024/25 with only seven goals.
As reported by the ECHO, Liverpool have come to this latest agreement after the striker and his agent pushed Liverpool to act upon transfer interest in January.
Liverpool, not wanting to sacrifice attacking depth during their Premier League title push, said no to negotiations in the winter but as Nunez and his representatives reiterated the player's desire to leave again this summer, a move is now being permitted.
Slot, speaking after the agreement was reached, said: "Darwin might leave but things aren't signed yet. We need to wait a few days before things are done."
But the 26-year-old himself was not afraid to voice his thoughts about a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia back in February, some six months ago.
When they were still Liverpool teammates last season Nunez and Luis Diaz, who was also linked with the Gulf state before finalising a £65.5m move to Bayern Munich instead this summer, took part in a YouTube video with Pro:Direct Soccer.
The tone of the joint-interview was light-hearted and covered a wide range of personal topics. One example were their cars, to which Diaz pointed out Nunez owns five in total, scoffing at the "big money" his friend earns.
"I need more money," Nunez replied with a wink and smile towards the camera. Thanks to subtitles it was revealed what was said next as he then covered his mouth, turned to his interviewer and whispered: "Saudi. Come on Saudi."
The Reds No.9 laughed about the tease whilst mimicking a phone to his ear with his hand, adding: "Ring, ring." Diaz could not help but laugh and clap at the suggestion.
Whilst maybe said in jest, it is now known that Nunez's mind appears fixed on a post-Liverpool career.
