Scott McTominay has been shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or, just a year after Manchester United showed him the door.
Scott McTominay goes from United exit to Ballon d’Or shortlist
Last summer, Scott McTominay packed his bags for Naples after slipping out of favour at Manchester United. Few expected the midfielder to bounce back in such style. Signed for £25m, he was seen as a solid squad option rather than a superstar.
Although, after he made his Serie A debut, McTominay wanted to flip that narrative. He finished with 13 goals and 6 assists in 36 total games. That is a feat better than a lot of players with much more experience. Stats aside, he did not rely only on goals to be a top player. His ability to score in key matches and approach to the sport with a leave-it-all-on-the-field mentality meant he immediately became a superstar.
Serie A is a league that rewards technical footballers very well. Though, McTominay just brought that gritty-English midfielder plugging away. He got goals to help Napoli in winning their fourth Serie A title. He has become a hero of the city since.
Great recognition for a season to remember
Now, the football world is now talking about McTominay for one of the sport’s top individual honours. Journalist Sam C has confirmed the midfielder’s first-ever nomination for the Ballon d’Or.
This nod confirms a year for top-notch scoring touch. But, it also praises his leadership and consistent displays. Man Utd may think of this as a little bit of a wasted opportunity. But, this is validation for McTominay that the right move at the right time can be a career-changer.
The nomination alone is to wear as a badge of honour. He is built to be part of the conversation of the greats of the game.
